Christian Discipleship at Home | Houses of Acts Part 1
Making room for God in everyday life
Christian discipleship at home grows through the ordinary moments we share with God and one another. A conversation around the table, a few minutes in Scripture or a simple prayer can become part of learning to walk with Jesus.
In Houses of Acts Part 1, I share how God met with me while I was scrubbing a toilet during an internship in America. I was frustrated with the task. Yet God spoke into that moment and began shaping how I understood my calling.
It was a reminder that we can hear His voice while serving, working and doing the jobs that fill an ordinary day.
What the widow's oil teaches us about the home
In 2 Kings 4:1–7, a widow brings a desperate situation to Elisha. Her husband has died, she faces a debt she cannot pay, and her sons are at risk of being taken into servitude. Elisha asks what she has in the house. Her answer is a small jar of oil.
She is instructed to gather empty vessels, go inside with her sons and shut the door. As she pours, the oil keeps flowing until the vessels are full. The provision enables her to pay the debt and live on what remains.
The detail that caught my attention was the closed door. The home became the setting for an encounter with God's provision. Her sons were there to see it. For me, this is an invitation to take seriously what God can do within our everyday family life.
The pattern of fellowship in Acts
Acts 2:42 describes believers continuing in the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking bread and prayer. Acts 2:46 also describes them sharing meals in their homes. Their faith had a place in the rhythms of daily life.
In Acts 12, believers gather to pray in Mary's house while Peter is imprisoned. When he arrives after his release, they struggle to believe the answer to their own prayers is standing at the door. It is an honest picture of people learning to expect God to respond.
These passages give us a practical place to begin: learning the Word, praying together and sharing life with others.
Practising Christian discipleship at home
Choose one simple rhythm you can practise this week. Read a short Bible passage together at a meal. Ask each person what they would like prayer for. Make space to share a testimony or talk about where you have noticed God's kindness.
If you live alone, you can still set aside a regular moment to read, pray and listen. You can also invite a trusted friend into that rhythm of fellowship.
For Kingdom leaders, these habits can shape how we lead at work. The patience we practise at home, the questions we bring to God and the care we give to people all travel with us into our businesses.
Reflection and prayer
Where could you make room for prayer, Scripture or a conversation about God in your home this week?
Father, help me recognise Your presence in everyday life. Teach me to hear Your voice, grow in Your Word and make room for fellowship in my home. Let the people around me experience Your love through the way I live. Amen.
