God's Favour: Six Lessons for Life and Business
Learning to recognise God's favour
At the start of this year, God gave me one word: favour. I'm not usually the word-of-the-year kind of guy, but when He gives me something, I want to go after it. So I started paying attention to what favour looks like in everyday life.
What follows are lessons I've been learning in my family, relationships and work. Some have come through ordinary moments. Others have come through seeing God open doors that people had prayed about for years.
1. Favour can grow
Luke 2:52 says Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. That verse helped me see favour in two directions: our walk with God and our relationships with people.
It also says Jesus grew. Favour has room to increase. For a Christian business owner, that gives us a useful question: how are we growing in wisdom, character and the way we relate to the people around us?
2. Steward the favour you already have
You may already carry favour you barely notice. Perhaps you've built a good name in your community through years of keeping your word. Perhaps you have trusted relationships that go back decades, or people who know they can rely on you.
These things deserve our attention. Before asking God for another open door, look at what He's already placed in your hands. Thank Him for it, and consider how you can look after those relationships and responsibilities this week.
3. Honour the favour others lend you
An introduction, a referral or a recommendation can carry someone else's reputation into a room before you arrive. That's what I mean by borrowed favour. Someone has put their name on the line because they trust you.
In business, that trust matters. Follow through. Communicate clearly. Do the work well. Honour the person who introduced you by taking good care of the opportunity and the people involved.
4. Favour follows focus
I've watched this in my son's life. He's finishing Grade 11 and decided he wanted to pursue university. He got focused on his studies and began taking his health seriously. His grades improved dramatically, and he's now been recognised as school captain for next year.
I'm proud of his discipline and the way he's gone after his goals. It has reminded me to give proper attention to my own assignment. What has God asked you to pursue, and where does your daily attention need to line up with it?
5. Recognise the faithfulness behind an open door
I've also seen friends and family step into dream homes, dream jobs and opportunities that once felt a long way off. Those moments have been exciting to watch.
What stood out was the preparation behind them. These were people who had stayed focused and faithful through years of work, prayer and challenges. The breakthrough was visible. Much of the preparation had happened quietly. Their stories have encouraged me to keep showing up in the seasons when progress is harder to see.
6. Let humility settle your identity
James 4:6 tells us God gives grace to the humble. Early this year, I asked Him to teach me humility. During that encounter, I became aware of how secure I could be in who I am in Christ, without needing promotion or influence to prove it.
That has stayed with me. Humility gives us room to listen, learn and serve. As sons and daughters of the King, we can pursue our assignment from a place of belonging. We can thank God for an open door, honour the people involved and walk through it without making it the measure of our worth.
Reflection and prayer
What favour are you already walking in, and what is one practical way you could steward it well this week?
Father, thank You for the favour already on my life. Help me recognise it, honour the people You've placed around me and stay focused on my assignment. Teach me humility and help me walk securely in who I am in Christ. Amen.
