It's Probably God
"It's Probably God" — The One Truth That Changes How You Hear Him
You've asked the question. Probably more than once. How do you actually know if that's God, or just you talking to yourself?
Start With the Easy One
The enemy's voice is the simplest to rule out. It's laced with fear — thick with torment, condemnation, guilt and shame. If that's what you're hearing, cross it off the list. The harder work is telling your voice apart from His.
It Starts With Right Believing
Before any technique, start with the truth. You're a new creation. Your mind is being renewed, constantly, into closer alignment with Jesus. You're not learning a skill from scratch here — you're remembering something you were already designed for.
The Real Tell
Your voice tends to carry fear, anxiety or uncertainty. God's voice carries peace, love, and a wisdom that goes beyond what you'd land on yourself. And here's the giveaway — His answers rarely just treat the symptom. They go for the root. Like a good doctor, He's not interested in papering over the pain point you brought Him. He wants the cause.
Childlike, Not Childish
God's voice tends to be simple. When training people in the prophetic, the filter is this: how would a five to ten year old understand this word? Not a teenager — a kid. That simplicity lines up with Proverbs 3: trust in the Lord, lean not on your own understanding.
He Answers Before You Finish Asking
Your heart moves faster than your brain and mouth can keep up with. Often the very first thought that lands is Him — and we talk ourselves out of it by overanalysing.
Flip the Default
The usual default is "it's probably me, but it could be God." Flip it. It's probably God, and it could be me. That single shift is the difference between the occasional moment of hearing God and living in continual communion with Him.
"I Love You." That's It.
A business leader Matt was coaching had just worked through some deeply held lies. The question to Holy Spirit was simple — what truth replaces this? The answer was two words: "I love you." No elaboration needed. Business leaders are often brilliant at giving and hopeless at receiving. Sometimes the deepest truth God wants you to sit with is the simplest one.
His Voice and His Nature Are Inseparable
If the "God" you've heard sounds like condemnation, correction without empowerment, or a stick waiting to come down — that's not Him. God corrects, but He always corrects with empowerment. If church has ever taught you otherwise, that's worth naming, and it's worth apologising for.
The Goal Isn't a Checklist
Rather than obsessing over delineating every voice, go deeper into His. The more you hear Him, the more your own voice starts to sound like the Father's.
