No Contracts, Just Family: Kat Flannery on Scaling a Business With God
Most agencies lock clients into contracts. Kat Flannery's doesn't, and her clients stay anyway.
Kat is the CEO of Picco Press, a marketing agency in Alberta, Canada, with a team of around ten women serving trades and professional service businesses. On the latest episode of the Salt and Light Wealth Podcast, she shared how she partners with God in business.
From Writer to Agency Owner
Kat started as a freelance writer and went on to become a best-selling author. Marketing her own books, she realised she loved talking with readers and answering their questions. That curiosity led her back to study digital marketing and into starting her own company from a home office.
"I would not be here if it wasn't for God," she says. "And that is the truth."
Hearing God in the Everyday
Kat grew up knowing Jesus. When the business started to scale and fear set in, she went back to what she'd always done: prayer and morning devotionals. Her relationship with God, she says, has always been about seeking wisdom rather than asking for things.
Clients and Staff as Family
Client retention comes down to trust. Be transparent. Answer the phone, and if you miss the call, ring back. Sometimes a client just wants to vent, and that's part of the relationship too.
Kat treats her team the same way. She stocks the fridge ("I'm Italian"), wants her staff to love coming to work, and takes it seriously when she has to let someone go. She's made mistakes there, and she's brought them to God.
Three Keys to Scaling
Never stop learning. No matter how big you grow, there's always someone further ahead. Read, listen and keep studying.
Stay humble. Early on, Kat emailed twenty famous authors for advice. Two replied. She decided that if she ever made it, she'd always answer the email.
Give. If God has blessed your business, give back. If you can't give money yet, give your time.
When a Client Walks Away
Kat admits she takes losing a client personally. She reflects, asks what could have been done better, and brings her worry to God. "God has never failed," she says. Within a week or two, new enquiries come in.
One Truth to Carry
Kat's parting word for listeners was simple: never forget where you came from. Count your blessings, and you'll see everyone else on the same level.
